While AI is replacing jobs, data shows that artificial intelligence is simultaneously creating new job opportunities.

Due to the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence, there is a need for professionals specialized in AI development, data management, and compliance.

Let’s take a look at the latest AI job creation statistics.

Key Statistics and Trends

  • AI will create 20 to 50 million new jobs by 2030
  • Data management openings are projected to grow by 117% in the next 5 years
  • Machine learning openings are projected to grow by 82% in the next 5 years
  • 55% of employees say AI will eliminate more jobs than it creates

AI will create 20 to 50 million new jobs by 2030 (McKinsey)

In a recent report, McKinsey Global Institute gives an optimistic estimate for AI job creation.

According to McKinsey, AI could contribute to the creation of 20 to 50 million new jobs globally by 2030.

AI job creation will accelerate over time, with an estimated annual growth rate of 20%.

In the McKinsey 50-million scenario (graph below), AI job creation starts at approximately 4.77 million per year and grows to nearly 12.97 million by 2030.

AI job creation per year: from 2025 to 2030

The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report is also optimistic and claims that new technologies (AI, robotics, etc.) will help create approximately 170 million new jobs by 2030, equivalent to 14% of today’s total employment.

According to the same report, this growth is expected to be offset by the displacement of 92 million, resulting in a net growth of 78 million jobs.

Machine learning openings are projected to grow by 82% in the next 5 years (WEF)

An employer survey from the World Economic Forum highlights the jobs expected to experience the fastest net growth over the next five years.

Employers predict that big data specialists will see the highest growth at 117%. AI Specialists follow closely with 82% growth.

Surprisingly, employers believe the number of software developers will grow by 57% over the next five years. This is despite new AI automation tools like GitHub Copilot, which help developers code more efficiently.

Other notable careers that expect growth include Data Warehousing (44%), Data Analysts (41%), Security Analysts (39%), and DevOps Engineers (38%).

Jobs growth for different careers

Additionally, the rise of AI will create entirely new career paths that didn’t exist before.

Roles such as data annotation specialists, AI ethicists, AI strategists, AI legal advisors, and AI educators will become increasingly important as organizations navigate the new challenges of AI integration.

55% of employees say AI will eliminate more jobs than it creates (The i Paper)

A BMG poll published in The i Paper shows that 55% of employees think more jobs will be lost to AI than created by it.

AI job creation sentiment analysis

While it's interesting to note that 55% of employees believe AI will eliminate more jobs than it creates, I think that the poll is very biased.

Indeed, as an employee, it’s easier to see which tasks are likely to be automated and overlook the potential for AI to generate entirely new opportunities that can redefine the workplace.

Consider this figure as a sentiment analysis rather than a forecast of the job market.
